Marketing a business here
A complete guide to marketing a business in Cameroon.
Where to start, what order to do things in, which channels suit which business, what each part costs, what to do yourself, and how to tell whether any of it is working. Written for owners who have to decide where the next 100,000 FCFA goes.
Order matters more than budget.
Most marketing money here is wasted on sequence rather than on choice. A business advertises before the website can convert, or pays for SEO before deciding what it sells to whom, or rebrands while nobody can find it. Each of those buys a real thing at the wrong moment.
The order that works is unexciting and reliable: be findable, be credible, be fast to respond, then buy attention. Every step makes the next one cheaper, and skipping one makes everything after it more expensive.
This is the top of our knowledge base. It links to the detailed guide for each part, so you can start wherever your business actually is.
Key takeaways
- Spend in order: be findable, be credible, reply fast, then buy attention. Each step makes the next cheaper.
- Your Google Business Profile is free and usually the fastest result available.
- Build the channels that keep working after you stop paying first, and use advertising when you need results now.
- Do the habits yourself, and pay for the things that are expensive to get wrong once.
- Measure three numbers every month: enquiries, cost per enquiry, and how many became customers.
The order that works
Four steps, in this order. Each one makes the next cheaper, and each one you skip makes everything after it more expensive.

| Step | What it means | Cheapest first move | The detailed guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Be findable | People searching for what you sell can find you | Claim and complete your Google Business Profile | SEO guide |
| 2. Be credible | Visitors can tell quickly that you are real and right for them | A simple site that answers the seven homepage questions | Website guide |
| 3. Reply fast | No enquiry waits or gets lost | An automatic first reply on WhatsApp | AI and automation guide |
| 4. Buy attention | Paying to reach more people | One focused campaign on one platform, for a month | Advertising guide |
First, be findable for the things you sell
If somebody searching for your service cannot find you, nothing else you do matters. For most businesses here the fastest version of this is not a website project at all: it is claiming and completing the Google Business Profile, which puts you in the map results and takes an afternoon.
After that comes a page for each thing you sell, written for the words customers actually use, in French and English. One page listing eight services ranks for none of them. Eight pages can rank for eight things.
Increasingly, being findable also means being named when somebody asks ChatGPT or Gemini instead of searching. Google says its own AI answers need nothing beyond good SEO; the other assistants reward consistent, factual information about you across the web.
The SEO guide covers all of this, and GEO covers the AI side.
Second, be credible when they arrive
Being found and being chosen are separate problems. A visitor is asking whether you are real, whether this is for them, what it costs, and how to reach a human. Answer those above the fold, in plain words, and most of the work is done.
This is where speed belongs too. On mobile data, a slow page is an invisible one. It is also where published prices earn their keep: in a market where most quotes require a phone call, showing the number removes the main reason somebody hesitates.
- Real photographs of your premises, products and people
- Reviews from named customers, and replies to them
- A physical address and a phone number that is answered
- Prices, or at least how pricing works
- A consistent look across your sign, your page and your messages
The website guide covers credibility on your own site, and the branding guide covers looking like the same business everywhere.
Third, answer fast, because that is where most work is lost
The gap between an enquiry arriving and somebody replying is where most small businesses lose work, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to fix. An instant acknowledgement, a follow-up on quotes nobody chased, and every lead landing in one place will usually return more than the same money spent on advertising.
It is also the least visible improvement, which is why it gets skipped. Nobody sends you a message saying they went elsewhere because you took two days. They simply go, and you never learn that the enquiry existed.
The AI and automation guide shows what to automate first, and the social media guide covers setting up WhatsApp Business properly.
Only then, buy attention
Advertising multiplies whatever your website already does. If the page converts, advertising is an investment. If it does not, it buys the same failure at a larger scale, which is why so many businesses conclude that advertising does not work here when what failed was the page behind it.
- Know what one customer is worth before setting a budget
- Start on one platform, tightly focused, for a month
- Judge it on enquiries and their cost, not on clicks or impressions
- Fix the landing page before raising the spend
The advertising guide covers budgets, platforms, tracking and reading the report.
Which channels suit which business
Every channel has a speed, a cost and a shelf life. Choosing well is mostly matching those to where your business is right now.
| Channel | How fast it works | Keeps working after you stop paying? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Weeks | Yes | Any business customers visit or call locally |
| Website and SEO | Two to six months | Yes, for years | Businesses people search for |
| GEO for AI answers | Three months or more | Yes | Businesses people ask assistants about |
| Google Ads | Days | No | Services people already search for, when you need enquiries now |
| Meta and TikTok ads | Days | No | Visual products and offers people were not looking for |
| Social media, organic | Months | Partly | Businesses customers check before buying |
| WhatsApp and automation | Days | Yes, while it runs | Every business that takes enquiries |
| Online store | Weeks to build | Yes | Businesses already selling through messages |
The channels that keep working after you stop paying are the ones to build first if you can wait. Advertising is the one to use when you cannot, and the one to stop first when money is tight.
What each part costs
So you can plan rather than guess, and so you can tell whether a quote from anybody is reasonable, these are our published prices.
| What | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | An afternoon of your time |
| Single-page website | 80,000 FCFA | With a year of hosting and a .com domain |
| Business website, up to six pages | 250,000 FCFA | With a basic SEO setup and an editing system |
| Online store | From 600,000 FCFA | With mobile money and delivery zones |
| Local SEO setup | 100,000 FCFA once | The foundations without a retainer |
| SEO retainer | From 75,000 FCFA a month | Up to 450,000 for competitive markets |
| Ads management | From 100,000 FCFA a month | Plus the ad budget, paid directly to the platform |
| Care plan | From 50,000 FCFA a year | Hosting, updates, backups and monitoring |
| AI automation | From 150,000 FCFA setup | Optional care from 25,000 FCFA a month; tools paid by you |
| Branding | Quoted in writing | Depends on the scope |
What each tier includes, and what quietly gets quoted as an extra elsewhere, is covered in how much should a website cost in Cameroon. Every plan is on our pricing pages.
If you are starting from nothing, here is the order
The first ninety days matter more than the next year, because everything afterwards compounds from what you set up now.

| When | Do this | Skip for now |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 30 | Claim and complete the Google Business Profile. Set up WhatsApp Business with an instant reply | Advertising, rebranding |
| Days 31 to 60 | Build a small site that answers the seven questions, with a page for each main service | A blog, a shop, extra platforms |
| Days 61 to 90 | Ask every customer for a review. Start recording the three numbers below | Anything you cannot keep up in a busy month |
What is not achievable is doing all of it in the first fortnight, which is how people end up abandoning half of it.
Your first ninety days online, in order is the week-by-week version, including what to deliberately ignore for now.
Do it yourself, or pay somebody
A good deal of this is genuinely doable alone, and it is worth being clear about which parts, because agencies rarely volunteer the answer.

The honest test is not whether you could learn something. It is whether you will do it in a month when the business is busy. A cheap thing you never do costs more than a paid thing that happens. Writing content sits in between, and depends entirely on whether you will actually write it.
The mistakes that cost the most here
Not the small errors, the expensive ones, in rough order of how much they cost the businesses we meet.
| Mistake | What it costs | The cheaper alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Not owning the domain | Leaving a supplier means losing the address | Domain, hosting and logins in your name from day one |
| Advertising before the site converts | A budget spent, and a wrong conclusion about ads | Fix the landing page first |
| A site nobody can edit | It slowly stops matching the business | Training at handover, or a care plan |
| SEO on a broken site | Retainers spent on a site that cannot rank | Technical fixes before content |
| Every platform at once | Abandoned pages that look like an abandoned business | Two platforms, done properly |
| Never asking for reviews | A competitor with nine reviews ranks above you | Ask every happy customer, the same day |
Every one of those is cheaper to avoid than to fix, and none of them requires a large budget to get right.
Then measure three numbers, not thirty
Most reporting is decoration. Three numbers tell you almost everything about whether your marketing is working.

| Number | How to work it out | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Enquiries received | Count every call, message and form each month, and ask where each came from | Whether people are reaching you |
| Cost per enquiry | What you spent on marketing, divided by enquiries | Which channels are worth their money |
| Enquiries that became customers | Count the sales that started as an enquiry | Whether the problem is the marketing or the follow-up |
Write them down somewhere dull and permanent. A number you record every month for a year is worth more than a dashboard nobody opens, because the pattern is the point rather than the value in any single month.
How to tell whether your marketing is actually working covers setting those three up when you have no analytics and no budget for tools.
If you only take one thing from this pageSpend in the order above. A business that is findable, credible and quick to reply gets more from a small budget than a business doing all four badly with a large one.
Where the next 100,000 FCFA should go
The most common question we hear is where a limited budget will do the most good. The answer depends on where the business is now. As a rule of thumb:
| If this is true | Spend the next 100,000 FCFA on | Not yet on |
|---|---|---|
| You have no website and no Google profile | A single-page website (80,000 FCFA) and a completed Google Business Profile (free) | Advertising, branding |
| You have a site but nobody finds it | The local SEO setup (100,000 FCFA once) | A redesign |
| People find you but do not get in touch | Fixing the homepage and service pages | More traffic |
| Enquiries arrive but go cold | An instant reply and quote follow-up | Advertising |
| Everything above works | One focused ad campaign, with ads management from 100,000 FCFA a month | A second platform |
Every price above is on our pricing pages. If you are not sure which row you are in, the free audit will tell you.
Marketing for different kinds of business
The order holds for everyone, but the first priority differs by sector. These are where we usually start.
| Business | Start with | The detail |
|---|---|---|
| Shops and retail | Google Business Profile, WhatsApp catalogue, then an online store | Retail and eCommerce |
| Hotels and guesthouses | Direct booking on the website and a strong profile | Hotels and hospitality |
| Clinics and pharmacies | A clear, trustworthy site and appointment reminders | Healthcare and clinics |
| Consultants and firms | Service pages that prove expertise, and a credible team page | Professional services |
| Transport and delivery | Tracking that customers can check themselves | Logistics and transport |
| NGOs and foundations | Evidence: reports, named people, registration details | NGOs and non-profits |
All of them are on our industries page.
Working in French and English
Cameroon is one of the few markets where getting the language right is a marketing decision in its own right. Many customers search in French, many read in English, and plenty switch between the two.
- Research searches in both languages; the French phrase often has less competition
- Give each language its own page rather than mixing both on one
- Ask for reviews in the customer’s language
- Write WhatsApp quick replies in both
- Check AI answers in both, because assistants answer in the language they are asked in
Our SEO guide and the post on SEO vs GEO cover the search side in more detail.
All eight guides
Each part of this page has its own complete guide. Start with the one that matches where your business is weakest.
| Guide | Read it if |
|---|---|
| SEO | People cannot find you on Google or in AI answers |
| Business websites | You need a site, or yours is not bringing enquiries |
| Selling online | You sell products and want to take orders without the back-and-forth |
| Advertising | You need enquiries now, or your ads are not paying |
| Social media | Your pages are quiet, or busy but not bringing customers |
| Branding | You look smaller or less credible than you are |
| AI and automation | Enquiries wait, or follow-ups get forgotten |

Questions
The things people ask first.
With being findable. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, then make sure each service you sell has its own page written in the words customers use. Both are cheap, and everything else you spend works better afterwards.
With us, websites start at 80,000 FCFA, SEO retainers at 75,000 FCFA a month, a local SEO setup is 100,000 FCFA once, and ads management starts at 100,000 FCFA a month plus the ad budget paid to the platform. Our whole price list is published rather than quoted on a call.
Be findable, be credible, answer fast, then buy attention. Each step makes the next cheaper. Advertising before the website converts is the most common and most expensive mistake.
It depends on whether customers already search for what you sell and how quickly you need results. Google Business Profile and a good website keep working for years; advertising works in days but stops when you stop paying. Most businesses need two channels done well, not six done badly.
Almost certainly not. Most of our clients use two. We would rather do one thing properly than sell a bundle you cannot use, and we will say when something on our own price list is not worth it for you yet.
Your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews, replying quickly and posting consistently are all genuinely doable alone. The website build, technical SEO, ads management and brand identity are worth paying for, because they are expensive to get wrong.
Three numbers: enquiries received, cost per enquiry, and how many became customers. If a report leads with impressions or followers, it is leading with its most flattering number rather than its most useful one.
Advertising produces clicks on day one and useful data after a month. Local search can move in weeks. Competitive SEO takes three to six months or more. Anyone promising faster than that on organic search is guessing.
