Third place with a good listing beats first place with a bad one
Businesses celebrate a ranking and then wonder why the phone stays quiet. The reason is usually simple. Showing up on the results page and being picked from it are two different things, and only the second one earns you anything.
A search result is an advert you didn’t pay for. It has a headline, a line of text, and about two seconds to beat five competitors sitting right above and below it. Most businesses never write it on purpose at all. They let Google build something out of whatever text it finds.
Your title is a headline, not a label
The most common title in this market is the business name and nothing else, or the service followed by the business name. Neither gives anyone a reason to choose you.
A title that earns clicks answers the search and adds one reason to pick you: a price, a place, a timescale, or something your competitors can’t say. “Hotel in Douala” is a label. “Hotel in Douala with instant online booking” is an argument.
Keep it under about sixty characters or Google cuts it off. Put the important words first, because that’s where people look. And write a different one for every page.
A test worth doingSearch your main service, screenshot the results page, and cover up your competitors’ listings. Would you click yours? If you’re honest and the answer is no, that’s your whole problem.
The description is the second half of the pitch
Google doesn’t use the meta description to decide rankings, which is why people ignore it. That’s a mistake. It’s still the two lines a human reads before deciding.
Write it for the person, not the algorithm. Say what the page contains, name the thing that makes you different, and say what happens next. About 150 characters, one clear idea, no keyword stuffing.
Leave it blank and Google will grab a piece of your page instead. It’s rarely the piece you would have picked.
You are not competing with nine blue links any more
A modern results page carries ads, a map pack, People Also Ask boxes, and more and more often an AI summary sitting above everything. Your listing can be a long way down the screen even in first place.
That changes what a good strategy looks like. Being in the map pack matters more than it used to. Being quotable in an AI answer matters more than it used to. And ranking for a question you can answer in two sentences is worth less than it was, because the answer now shows up without anyone visiting you.
Chase the searches where somebody has a decision to make or something to buy, not the ones where they just need a fact.
Rewriting a weak listing: before and after
Most weak listings fail for the same few reasons. Here is what a rewrite usually looks like.
| Before | After | Why it works | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | Home | Plumber in Bonamoussadi, Douala | Same-Day Call-Out | Says what, where, and one reason to choose you |
| Title | Welcome to Our Website | Hotel in Kribi with Sea-View Rooms | Book Online | Answers the search and promises an easy next step |
| Description | We are a leading company dedicated to excellence | Leaks and blocked drains fixed today across Douala. Prices from 10,000 FCFA. Call or WhatsApp. | A specific offer, a price, a way to act |
| Description | (left blank, Google picks random text) | Rooms from 35,000 FCFA a night, pool and breakfast included, five minutes from the beach. | Gives Google better text to show |
Google decides what to show and sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions, so treat yours as a strong suggestion rather than a guarantee. A clear, accurate one is the version it most often keeps.
Find your own weak listings in ten minutes
Open Google Search Console, go to the performance report, and switch on both the average position and the click-through rate columns.
Sort by impressions. Look for pages in the top ten with a click-through rate clearly below the others. On those pages you’ve already done the hard work and you’re losing the click at the last step. Rewrite the title and description there first. It’s the cheapest improvement you can make.
Then check again in a month. This is one of the few SEO changes where the effect shows up quickly.

Questions people ask
Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters, so it is not cut off on most screens. Put the most important words first: what you offer and where.
Google rewrites titles it thinks do not describe the page well, for example when they are too long, stuffed with keywords or the same on every page. A clear, specific title that matches the page is the one it usually keeps.
Not directly. It affects whether people click, and a result that earns more clicks for the right searches is doing its job. Write it as a short pitch, not a list of keywords.
In Google Search Console, open the Performance report, show average CTR and position, and sort by impressions. Pages with many impressions and a low click rate are the ones worth rewriting first.
